What is a CROP Hunger Walk?

Neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well
as local hunger-fighting.

2009 CROP Hunger Walk
When?

Sunday, October 4, 2009 - Despite the rain, we walked on!

Where?

The walk began at First United Methodist Church, 1589 West Maple in Birmingham. The walk ended at First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham.

Tell me more...

The Kirk has enjoyed a friendly rivalry with First United Methodist Church of Birmingham – a rivalry that has generated tens of thousands of dollars every year to benefit needy people around the world. The tradition of “trash talk” between pastors and lay people from each church is conducted in the spirit of good Christian fellowship – with an attitude! All of this craziness has made it possible for the Kirk or First United Methodist to be among the top national fundraisers for *Church World Services (CWS) in the last several years.

Sign up for CROP Walk! This year we made things especially interesting with a two-way internal competition within the Kirk, including a battle of the sexes between Men of the Kirk and Women of the Kirk, and a battle for the ages between Kirk Youth Groups and the Kirk Seniors! Rumor had it that
Dr. Pritchard was still smarting over being “nosed-out” by a dog in the competition three years ago, so he was really pushing the Men of
the Kirk. Everyone was encouraged to take sides in the internal competition to assure that we get the Shoe Trophy back from First United Methodist.

Helpful hints...

Dr. Pritchard holding the "Shoe Trophy"The fundraising numbers...

After the Kirk’s record-breaking 2006 total of $29,503, First Methodist came storming back last year to take second place nationally by raising $38,449.
In 2009, our goal was to show First Methodist “how it’s done” by bringing the Shoe Trophy back to the Kirk, where it belongs. Church World Services and needy people around the world will thank you for getting involved in this fun-filled good work. All funds are divided between CWS (75%) and the remaining 25% divided between six local charities, including:

• Baldwin Center, Pontiac
• South Oakland Center, Royal Oak
• Lighthouse of Oakland County, Pontiac
• Gleaners Community Food Bank of S. E. MI
• Detroit Friendship House, Detroit
• Cass Community Social Services, Detroit
