2010 South Oakland Shelter - RECAP
“Breaking the cycle of homelessness” – that is the vital mission of the South Oakland Shelter (SOS). For the third consecutive year, Kirk in
the Hills was one of more than 60 congregations participating in this amazing and wonderful ministry.
SOS provides temporary shelter for over 300 families and individuals
each year, along with supportive programs and resources such as
career building, rapid re-housing, job readiness and employability skills, financial literacy, self care and nutritional planning. They have a food pantry, clothing closet and even teach Yoga techniques to alleviate stress.

From May 9-16, the Kirk housed, fed, transported and cared for approximately 30 men, women and children. During this time, Kirk members volunteered in a number of different ways. They delivered beds, drove people to and from work, cooked for the families, did laundry, performed clean-up duties, served as evening hosts and some stayed the night.
This is a wonderful outreach program, especially during the tough economic times we are currently experiencing. People are finding themselves in some extraordinary and difficult situations and SOS can be a great help to these families. This is also a wonderful example of our faith in action – giving of our time, talents and treasures to meet the needs of others.
