May Monthly Minute

May 31, 2022

Thirteen Kirk volunteers led by Ann and George Manning gathered with Pastor Edwin Saturday April 30 for the Kirk’s semi-annual cleanup of Long Lake road between Middlebelt and Telegraph. For several years, the Kirk has Adopted Long Lake Road and volunteers come out to pick up trash and debris to keep the roadway clean. Thanks to a donation from Men of the Kirk, the crew was equipped with “trash grabber” sticks and a record 31 bags of trash were collected.
Our Fall Adopt-A-Road day is Saturday October 15. We would love to have you join us!

Wednesday May 18, the Kirk hosted our 2nd Annual Faith Leader Breakfast with 54 faith and non-profit partners in attendance. The Mayor of Pontiac, Tim Greimel, shared his “Resident Centric” philosophy along with his current top 2-3 goals for the city. The State of Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services Director of Faith and Community Engagement, Bill Hardiman, shared a few extremely compelling stories and gave insight into ways our faith and non-profit communities could partner with his department. Thrivent sponsored the Breakfast. Kirk member, Sally Brown led our Kirk kitchen crew of 20+ volunteers to make a fabulous breakfast with an outstanding dining room presentation. We concluded our event with a round table discussion narrowing us down to one BIG 2022 GOAL for the collective group to achieve: Creating a “One Stop Shop” where anyone in Oakland County could access all the resources available. It is an extremely lofty goal. But it is one we can see would truly help everybody! From the non-profit sector trying to get their information out, to the people struggling to find help and all the people in-between, like those from our congregations, trying to assist in any way possible. So, we are beginning to explore ways to get this ball rolling! If you would like to explore different possibilities with us, please contact Julie Walker at   ! Otherwise stay tuned for more information to come!
May 1 Pastor Angela’s Farewell Party was a tribute to her and all she had done for the past 5 years she served here at the Kirk. Members made speeches about the remarkable way Pastor Angela could remember everybody’s name; the numerous hospital and house visits/calls Pastor Angela made ministering to those who needed congregational care, the countless hours she put into her sermon notes shared among the small groups and how she had gotten those small groups started when she first arrived, and finally all she had done to build up the Deacons and Christian Formation here at the Kirk including our Kyes Lecture Series. Pastor Angela will be missed but we wish her the best in all of her future callings!

Sunday, May 22 we welcomed 5 new members; Ken, Sharon and John Ostrander, Sarah Varitek and Chad Fields. We are thrilled they have decided to become members and look forward to sharing this faith journey with them!

We had a lot of exciting events with our youth choirs this month: singing on Mother’s Day/ Confirmation Sunday, presenting our Annual Spring Festival, and welcoming new students to Chorister for a Day – which included a trip up to see the Kirk’s famous bell tower! We are so proud of our young people, and grateful for their faithfulness in leading worship!

Thank you to the choir. A special farewell to member, Jann Lardo who has sung in the choir for 37 1/2 years!
On May 12th, Pastors Edwin, Keith and Jasmine bowled in the Holy Rollers Bowling Tournament sponsored by Lynch and Sons Funeral Homes. Although our pastors didn’t bring home the grand prize, it was a great opportunity for fun and fellowship amid other members of clergy in the area.

Greetings from Scotland! While on their pilgrimage, the group stopped and visited Melrose Abbey. More photos to come in the next Monthly Minute!

May was a month of endings and celebrations. Both middle school and high school youth spent time in fellowship playing games, eating good food, and enjoying one another’s company one last time for the spring. It was a wonderful way to send off our 8th grade and senior classes as they start a new adventure in the fall! In addition to that we celebrated 16 new youth joining the church in May. These students worked hard this year and the church has just gained a group of incredibly faithful individuals!
