2026 Pilgrimage to Italy Dates

Kirk in the Hills is pleased to announce our 2026 Pilgrimage to Italy, April 13-23, 2026 – an 11-day trip to study Christian art and architecture.

The pilgrimage will be led by Pastor Edwin Estevez and Tracee Glab, Flint Institute of Arts Executive Director. In Italy, you will experience the most powerful visual representations of Christianity in the world. From humble works created in secret to grand public expressions in painting, sculpture, and architecture, this Christian art pilgrimage is sure to delight your senses and inspire your faith journey.

ITINERARY

0n this tour of Italy, you will see:

  • Some of the earliest artistic expressions of Christian art created during a time of intense persecution in the 2nd century
  • Classical motifs and techniques that were used to legitimize the faith, once Christianity became a legal religion in the Roman Empire in the 4th century
  • Humble pilgrimage sites that became magnificent artistic creations over several centuries
  • The transition from the medieval Byzantine style into a more naturalistic approach that paved the way for the Renaissance
  • The zenith of Christian art in works created in the Renaissance
  • Art that was used as a tool to bring people back to (or keep them straying from) the Catholic church after the Protestant Reformation;
  • Ancient ruins that inspired 18th-century artists and architects to create Neoclassical art.
